About: To be the daughter of a Blues Legend is a major obstacle. To choose to follow in his footsteps is a major undertaking. But rather than relying on her father, Zakiya has pursued life and music oh her own terms.
Zakiya is a strong and verstile vocalist. Her Jazzy Blues sounds take you in and out of songs like Hey Lady, Baby You Busted, New Orleans Rain and Protect Me From The Blues. These songs are from her debut CD Another Generation Of The Blues on Silvertone Records. Her second CD Flavors Of The Blues was released on Pointblank/Virgin. Zakiya released a live CD in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Colors Of The Blues. She is now working on her fourth CD.
Zakiya made her debut performance in 1991 with her father, John Lee Hooker, at the Kaiser Center Theatre in Oakland, California. Since that time Zakiya has gone on to perform on shows with Etta James, Charles Brown, John Hammond, Taj Mahal and many more. Zakiya has been the recipient of numerous awards in her career. She has received awards from numerous Blues Societies i and out of California for her innovative style of music and her lively and upbeat performances. Zakiya recently crossed over into the jazz genre when she was awarded the 1st Annual KCSM's "Jazzy" Award for Best Stage Performance.
Zakiya has performed nationally and internationally. She has performed at teh world famous Fillmore Auditorium, the San Francisco Blues Festival and the Monterey Jazz & Blues Festivals. She has been on the cover of several well known trade magazines including Billboard Magazine. Zakiya's voice can also be heard on advertisements for Lexus and AIWA, and on the soundtrack of the movie Chalk, which has won both the Camera d'Or at Cannes and Grand Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in San Francisco, California.
Zakiya has a passion for the blues. It has given her the opportunity to speak on Blues panels and for her to give spoken word performances about this unique American Art form, all in addition to her performing and recording career. Zakiya was given the honor of speaking at film director Martin Scorsese's Radio City Music Hall Blues Concert on February 7, 2003, a concert that was filmed by director Antoine Fuqua. Zakiya has also been a panelist, as well as a spoken word performer at San Francisco's KQED-TV launch program for Scorsese's fall 2003 PBS-TV series "The Blues" at San Francisco's Herbst Theatre on September 16, 2003. Zakiya's music has carried her all over the world and given her the opportunity to perform for fans the world over.
