U2 launches 360 Tour in Spain - U2 [ tickets kicked off its 360 Tour in grand fashion last night (6/30) in Barcelona, Spain, unveiling a huge, high-tech set design during a show that also paid tribute to Michael Jackson. Surrounded by fans at Barcelona's Camp Nou soccer stadium on a round stage designed by long-time band collaborator Willie Williams and architect Mark Fisher ("We've got a space station designed by Gaudi," Bono reportedly joked to the 90,000-strong Spanish crowd) the band launched into a run-through of familiar hits along with material from the group's most recent album, "No Line on the Horizon," including the show opener, "Breathe." "The band has been moving further into the crowd with every tour," said U2 manager Pail McGuinness in a press statement. "Tonight they've arrived. Willie and Mark have spent five years perfecting this beautiful and extraordinary frame, once the crowd came in tonight, we got lift-off!" According to reports, U2 appeared to pull out all the stops on the trek's opening night, including a conversation between Bono and the commander of the International Space Station via live link, and a tribute to the late Michael Jackson in the form of the song "Angel of Harlem." The tour continues tomorrow night (7/2) in the same venue before moving on to similarly oversized gigs in Italy, France, Germany and the Netherlands, after which the band returns home for three nights in Dublin, Ireland. The tour then adds shows in several additional European cities through late August. After taking a breather for a few weeks, the scene shifts to North America, where U2 will kick off a 16-city run Sept. 12 with the first of back-to-back shows in Chicago, IL. Dates are below, including the band's current European leg. U2's 12th studio album, "No Line on the Horizon," surfaced in February. The set debuted at No. 1 in 30 countries, including the US, where it posted first-week sales of about 484,000 copies. The album's first single, "Get on Your Boots," peaked at No. 37 on Billboard's Hot 100, with the second single, "Magnificent," surfacing in May. A third track, "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight," is due to hit radio stations in August. Alice in Chains prep for headlining run behind new album - Alice in Chains has firmed up a US outing for later this summer behind "Black Gives Way to Blue," the group's first studio album in more than a decade. The alt-metal icons will perform alongside Kid Rock July 18 at Detroit's Comerica Park before heading across the pond for a European festival leg with Metallica. The Seattle-based band will return to the US for an Aug. 22 performance in Pomona, CA, with Tool and Linkin Park, before kicking off an 11-city headlining trek Sept. 4 in Washington, DC. The full schedule is shown below. "Black Gives Way to Blue," Alice in Chains' fourth studio set and first since 1995's chart-topping self-titled album, will hit shelves Sept. 29. The forthcoming collection will mark the debut of new AIC vocalist William DuVall, who takes over for the band's original lead singer, Layne Staley, who died of a drug overdose in 2002. The group recently posted the record's first single, the seven-minute-long track "A Looking in View," at the band's website . "The song basically speaks to any number of things that keep you balled up inside," singer/guitarist Jerry Cantrell explained in a press release. "It's funny how hard we fight to hang on to a bone we can't pull through a hole in the fence, or how difficult it is to put down the bag of bricks and move on." A music video for the single will be posted on the group's website in the near future, according to a press release. During its previous incarnation, the rock outfit, which has received multiple Grammy nominations, sold more than 17 million albums worldwide and recorded nearly a dozen Top 10 singles, including "No Excuses," "Heaven Beside You," "Get Born Again" and "Over Now." Michael Jackson makes chart history - Michael Jackson 's unexpected death last week spurred sales of the pop icon's albums to the extent that the three best-selling albums in the US this week, as well as the top nine entries on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums chart, are works from the late performer. Fittingly, Jackson's best-of set "Number Ones"--which, the week prior to his death, sold 4,000 copies--claims the No. 1 spot on the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart after logging sales of 108,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan retail data. "The Essential Michael Jackson" and "Thriller" follow at Nos. 2 and 3 with sales of 102,000 and 101,000, respectively. The same three albums would top The Billboard 200 were it not for the fact that catalog albums are ineligible to appear on that chart; the No. 1 slot will instead go to Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D.," which sold 88,000 copies. It is the first time that a catalog album has outsold the current No. 1 entry on The Billboard 200, according to the publication. Meanwhile, filling out the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart's subsequent six slots are 1979's "Off the Wall" at No. 4 with 33,000 copies sold; the Jackson 5's "The Ultimate Collection" at No. 5 with 18,000 copies; 1987's "Bad" at No. 6 with 17,000 copies; 1991's "Dangerous" at No. 7 with 14,000 copies; 2001's "Greatest Hits: HIStory -- Volume 1" at No. 8 with 12,000; and the 2004 box set "The Ultimate Collection" at No. 9 with 11,000 copies. In all, Jackson's solo albums sold a combined total of 415,000 copies, a sharp contrast to the 10,000 copies logged the week prior to his death, according to Billboard. That total also represents a 40% increase over what Jackson's entire catalog had sold through the first 25 weeks of 2009, Billboard reported. Jackson also claims the top four slots on the Top Digital Albums chart, and six out of that chart's Top 10 entries. Other noteworthy milestones include sales of 2.3 million digital tracks, making Jackson the first artist to sell 1 million or more tracks in a single week. That translates into 36 Jackson solo entries on the Top 200 Digital Songs chart (plus six additional Jackson 5 cuts). Unsurprisingly, radio airplay of Jackson's music skyrocketed following news of his death; Nielsen BDS, which monitors airplay from over 1,600 terrestrial and satellite radio stations and cable music channels, noted a 1,735% increase in plays of songs by the performer. It's a tragic week overall, but as the doors of the Vibe Media Group close, on the eve of the magazine's 16th anniversary, it's a sad day for music, for hip hop in particular, and for the millions of readers and users who have loved and continue to love the Vibe brand." Legendary producer Quincy Jones [ tickets founded the magazine with Time Warner in 1992, and sold it to Wicks Group about three years ago. Children of Bodom return to North America with 'Skeletons' - Finnish heavy-metal outfit Children of Bodom [ tickets will follow up a European festival run and South American jaunt with a North American tour this fall, all in support of the group's forthcoming album, "Skeletons in the Closet." The fall outing--the band's second US run this year--will touch down in 20 cities beginning Sept. 18 in Providence, RI, and continuing through an Oct. 14 appearance in Honolulu. A large portion of the itinerary takes the group north of the US border for a total of nine Canadian performances, including stops in Quebec City (9/22), Toronto (9/26), Winnipeg (9/30) and Calgary (10/2), among others. Details are included below. The metal quintet will follow last year's "Blooddrunk" with "Skeletons in the Closet," a covers album that is set to hit shelves in September on Spinefarm Records. Though the group is known to cover a range of hits--from Ozzy Osbourne's "Shot in the Dark" to Britney Spears' "Oops!...I Did it Again"--there's no word yet on what songs will make the new record. Earlier this year, Children of Bodom set out with Lamb of God and a handful of other bands for a spring tour of the US, but had to cut the road trip short when singer/guitarist Alexi Laiho broke his shoulder and suffered internal bleeding after falling from his bunk on the band's tour bus. "After the New York show [May , I knew it was going to be over," Laiho said in an official statement announcing the band's early exit from the run. "During the third song, I started feeling like someone was stabbing me in my lungs, my heart and my ribs. So, I decided to listen to everyone around me, who were telling me the best thing to do would be to go home and get some proper rest and give my shoulder some time to heal." Laiho has since made a full recovery. [Note: The following tour dates have been provided by artist and/or tour sources, who verify its accuracy as of the publication time of this story.
