Musician Profile |
About Me: I am an electric guitar player always on the look-out for interesting music projects to contribute to, whether live or recording. I can also turn my hand to playing bass or singing, if the occasion calls for it.
I play genres inluding blues, country, pop, prog rock and heavy rock. I am experienced at online collaboration, and would be happy to consider adding guitar solos to anything you have, whether commercial or just-for-fun - just email me guitargeorge@inbox.com.
The highlight of my musical career so far is having played on an award-winning Number 1 track - see Coming Home (in the "cool and soft stuff" playlist ).

The MP3's on my playlists |
The MP3s here are mostly online collaborations done on MCS and FJAM. I have split the music into 3 playlists: my online band ("The Sewer Pipe Boyz"), other loud and hi-energy stuff, and other cool and soft stuff.
* * * * The Sewer Pipe Boyz * * * *
Most of my recent recording has been with this online band. We rock!
Night Groove blues rock, somewhere between Hendrix and Purple. My guitar playing throughout, including a solo at 1'40. MCS, 2008
Walking Timebomb blues rock, heading towards King Crimson. My guitar playing throughout (except the guitar in the left channel in the solo section starting at 1'30). MCS, 2008
Dancing On The Bow Wave Rock, a nod towards "The Darkness". My rhythm guitar playing throughout, but the solos are by my bandmate Steve McAndrews - not just a fine singer and a pretty face!. This is an early mix - expect a more polished one in a few weeks. MCS, 2008
Minute To Midnight Slightly softer with shades of Led Zep, Free, King Crimson. I do the bluesy backing (not the clean guitar in the intro) and all solos except some of the solo in the outtro. MCS, 2008
* * * * other loud and hi-energy stuff * * * *
Scadaddle is a quick ditty for a competition in Guitarist magazine, to produce a 30 second riff. 2008
She's My Lady is a in the mould of Mott-The-Hoople or The Faces. Solo starting at 1'20. This was lot of fun, and flowed in only a small number of takes. MCS, 2007
Smoke On The Water. A whacky cover of the Deep Purple classic. I played the jazzy solo from 3'03 to 3'50. It took me a while to come up with something that was not Richie Blackmore but is nevertheless interesting. This was created for a competition on Ian Gillan's web site, which we were unjustly disqualified from! FJAM, 2006
Turn It On is chart style pop music, a little like Goldfrapp, electric guitar fills and wotnot throughout, with a solo at 2'07. FJAM, 2006 with Vince Jones.
Why a sort of country rock-and-roll thing. Solo at 1'47 and fills to the end. MCS, 2007
Barren Wasteland is soft rock. Solo at 3'10, and guitar fills throughout. I also mixed this. FJAM, 2007
Frozen In Time, an up-tempo Indie rock thing. Solo at 2'58. MCS, 2007
Calcutta and Tower are taken from a heavy metal album that is in an incomplete state of limbo, which I may finish one day, with my friend Phil Latham. These are just snippets of the guitar solos from a couple of the songs. I also programmed drums on these. 2004
Holy is hippy-ish with a hint of Santana, guitar fills throughout, solo at 2'20. FJAM, 2006
I Didn't See This Coming is a country number which was my first online recording, solos at the start and 2'00 in. This was a piece of session playing I did via LOOPWISE, 2005.
* * * * other cool and soft stuff * * * *
Welcome To The Human Race is my lead guitar (throughout) over a Walter Trout track (with is own lead guitar removed), done for a competition in Guitarist magazine. 2008
Game Of Fate is a bit like Steely Dan. Guitar solo at 4'18. FJAM, 2007
The Sentient is a nod towards Pink Floyd - this is just the 1st half of the song, the project was never finished. Lead guitar from the start, and also my singing (as a special treat!). FJAM, 2006 with the superb Billy Playle (aka "The Funge").
Coming Home, a sort of Sam Brown style smokey blues, electric guitar throughout, solo at 1'38. This was written and sung by Dirge K, and reached number 1 in the Independent Artist R+B/Soul Chart on 15th November 2007, and it was still there 4 months later. It has bobbled around the top of the chart ever since; I checked on 16th July 2008 and it was back at number 1!. It reached number 3 across all genres of Independent Artist charts, and was the International Academy of Independent Artists Golden Kayak Winner: Best R&B/Soul Song 2007 . FJAM, 2007
Faith Hope And Gravity a country number, guitar fills from 1'53, and a solo from 4'18. MCS, 2008 with Rob Talbert.
This Airplane's Landing another country number, guitar fills throughout, and solo at 1'55. MCS, 2008 with Rob Talbert.
Watch Of The Lord is soft and soulful stuff, with a solo at 3'33. FJAM, 2006, with a superb orchestral arrangement by Billy Playle.
Gave Up On Love - a soft jazz/pop thing, solo at 3'17. FJAM, 2006

Musical Equipment |
Guitars
On these recordings I mostly used a 1998 Fender USA Stratocaster. I have customised the electronics, with Seymour Duncan single-coil sized humbuckers (Little JB in the bridge, Little 59 in the middle, and Hot Rails in the neck). I also rewired the volume and tone circuitry to my own design, providing fairly different switching options to normal. I have tightened the vintage trem to the body and don't use it. When I feel the urge for tremolo work I use an Ibanez RG550EX, such as on Calcutta and Tower. I also have a Schecter strat as a spare, with a Pearly Gates humbucker in the bridge, and 2 Texas Special single coils - very similar to a Fender Lone Star Strat.
These guitars are the latest in a long line of guitars, which over time has included an Ibanez Explorer, 2 Les Paul copies, a Fender Telecaster, a Schecter 7-String, a Parker Nitefly, several Strat copies, and a couple of semi-acoustics. I'm pretty happy with the guitars I've got now, and have had them for several years. If I came into money I would buy a PRS to see what all the fuss is about.
Recording
The recordings are done with a Windows digital audio workstation, equipped with an M-Audio 2496 soundcard, and a good amp and monitors (Bose). I use Adobe Audition as recording and mixing software, and no MIDI - it feels too much like computer programming. If I need to rough out a quick drum track I use Fruity Loops, but real drummers win hands down every time.
I record direct into the sound card via a pre-amp, without miking. I use V-Stack (analogue) pre-amps, mostly the "Classic", and occasionally the "Tweedy", dependent on what the song calls for.
Some of the older tracks here are done with pre-amps that I no longer use:JStation for Calcutta, Tower, The Sentient and Barren Wasteland. Award Session JD10 for I Didn't See This Coming.
Live
For live work I use a Trace Elliot Custom Shop guitar combo, or I put my V-Stack pre-amp through a PA. Occasionally I also use a Morley Bad Horsie Wah pedal, but it doesn't appear on any of the recordings here.
